Energy Efficiency in the ICT - Profiling Power Consumption in Desktop Computer Systems

    Get PDF
Energy awareness in the ICT has become an important issue. Focusing on software, recent work suggested the existence of a relationship between power consumption, software configuration and usage patterns in computer systems. The aim of this work was collecting and analysing power consumption data of general-purpose computer systems, simulating common usage scenarios, in order to extract a power consumption profile for each scenario. We selected two desktop systems of different generations as test machines. Meanwhile, we developed 11 usage scenarios, and conducted several test runs of them, collecting power consumption data by means of a power meter. Our analysis resulted in an estimation of a power consumption value for each scenario and software application used, obtaining that each single scenario introduced an overhead from 2 to 11 Watts, which corresponds to a percentage increase that can reach up to 20% on recent and more powerful systems. We determined that software and its usage patterns impact consistently on the power consumption of computer systems. Further work will be devoted to evaluate how power consumption is affected by the usage of specific system resource

This study continues our series of synthesis of surface active agents containing heterocyclic moiety. NHeptadecanoyl- 3-(4-oxo-4H-benzo[d][1,3]oxazin-2-yl)- acrylamide (4) was used as a new starting material to synthesize propenoxylated nonionic surface active agents having heterocycles such as (thiazole, triazole, benzoxazine, quinazoline, triazine, and oxazine). The structures of the prepared compounds were elucidated by using spectroscopic tools (IR, 1H NMR and Mass spectroscopy). Physical properties such as surface and interfacial tension, cloud point, foaming height, wetting time, emulsification power and critical micelle concentration (CMC) were determined. Antimicrobial and biodegradability properties were also screened. It was found that the produced novel groups of nonionic surface active agents have pronounced surface properties and good antimicrobial activities.Este estudio continua nuestra serie sobre la síntesis de agentes surfactantes que contienen grupos heterociclicos. The reaction of 2-hydroxyheptadecanoyl chloride (2) and anthranilic acid gave 2-(1-hydroxyheptadecyl)-4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-one (3) which was used as starting material to synthesize some condensed and non-condensed heterocyclic compounds by a reaction with nitrogen nucleophiles (e.g., hydrazine hydrate, and formamide). The subsequent reaction of the synthetic products with different amounts of propylene oxide gave a novel group of nonionic compounds having a double function as antibacterial and surface active agents which may serve in the manufacturing of drugs, cosmetics, pesticides or as antibacterial and/or antifungal products. The surface active properties such as surface and interfacial tensions, cloud point, foaming height, wetting time, and emulsification power were determined. Antimicrobial and biodegradability were also screened.

Extended reality (XR) technology has the potential to revolutionize the way advertising is delivered and consumed. However, the current state of research on the use of XR in advertising is fragmented and lacks a comprehensive synthesis of the literature. In this systematic review, we analyze the existing research on the impact of XR on advertising and provide insights into its future potential. Our results indicate that XR advertising has the potential to increase consumer engagement, brand awareness, and purchase intent, but also poses challenges related to cost, accessibility, and user experience. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for the future of advertising and highlighting areas for future research

Background: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) has oxidative stress-related pathway as one of its possible mechanisms. Vanin-1 (VNN1) is an oxidative stress sensitive sensor. Objective: The present study was conducted to assess the clinical significance of VNN1 in pediatric ITP patients. Patients and Methods: A total of 50 kids with ITP have been involved in this work; 25 newly diagnosed, 25 chronic patients with ITP more than 12 months (15 responders and 10 non responders to treatment) and 25 apparently healthy children. All groups had their serum VNN-1 levels checked using a two-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent test. Results: The serum VNN1 level was significantly higher in ITP group than control group (p˂0.001). The level of serum VNN1 was significantly very high in newly diagnosed ITP group (p˂0.001) in comparison to chronic responders and chronic non responders ITP groups. Moreover, there was a significant increase in serum VNN1 level in chronic non responders ITP group (p˂0.001) compared to chronic responders group. In newly diagnosed ITP group, both age (r=-0.62, p=0.006) and the platelet count (r=-0.46, p=0.01) had a significant negative connection with serum VNN1 level. A cut-off value lower than 0.6 ng/ml for serum VNN1 could be used to distinguish the chronic non-responders ITP from chronic responders patients with 100 percent specificity and 90 percent sensitivity. Conclusion: From our current results, it is hypothesized that high VNN1 level plays a role in the pathogenesis and progress of pediatric ITP

Many scholars argue that the image of Arabs in Hollywood has always been tainted by prejudice and stereotyping. However, little attention is paid to women\u27s representation in general or the influence of 9/11 on that representation. This paper compares portrayals of Arab women in popular Hollywood films before and after 9/11. A purposive sample of 76 Arab female characters from 40 popular Hollywood films is used to conduct a content analysis, comparing portrayals in films released before and after 9/11. Popular Hollywood films are defined as films with at least 50,000 reviews that score seven or more on the International Movie Database (IMDB). The results show that Arab women’s representation lacks diversity and Arab women remain unidentified in Hollywood films. Arab women’s portrayal shifts from one of the magical or sexualized characters to one of the violent terrorists. Despite the overall increase in the amount of violence depicted after 9/11, there is a shift in favor of the portrayal of Arab women, with more depicted as good or pure after 9/11. Finally, the results show that the morality of Arab female characters improves, with more characters depicted as evaluating options and making their own decisions
